The Kobayashi Maru is a training exercise from Star Trek, designed as a no-win scenario for Starfleet Academy cadets. Ultimately, it's a test of character and decision-making under pressure, rather than a test of combat prowess. James T. Kirk famously cheated by reprogramming the simulation to give him a chance of success. Ed makes the comparison of one of Star Trek's most enduring references, to the Texas State legislature's move to redistrict 5 house races.
